General Research Interest: Our laboratory works in two areas:

1. Polyomavirus (JC, BK, SV40) persistence in normal and immunosuppressed patients.

2. Remote effects of cancer on the nervous system.

Student Participation: Helping with collection of samples, immunoflorescence studies, DNA extraction, PCR methodology.

Background Needed: Ideally 2-3 courses in biology, strong interest in medicine.

Outside Majors: Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Microbiology.

Key Words: Cancer, neurobiology, immunology, paraneoplastic syndromes, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy; viral tumorigenesis.

General Research Interest: Work in my lab involves study of genetic disorders of the nervous system. We are interested in identifying genes that cause human disease and in studying mutant and normal products of these genes to understand the role of these proteins in health and disease.

Student Participation: An undergraduate could be involved in varios aspects of laboratory work depending on background and experience.

Background Needed: Well rounded undergraduate with at least a junior standing. Strong science background preferred. Maturity is of highest importance.

Outside Majors: English, Behavioral Health and Science, Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, Math, Psychology.
