Research Interest: A) Silcion-micromachined pressure sensors
for measuring polymer flow properties. B) Use of hydrogels
to design miniature sensors for detecting biomedically-important
molecules.
Student
Participation: Spin-coating of ultrathin polymer films
on silicon-micromachined pressure sensors in microfabcrication
lab; synthesis of hydrogels in collaboration with local company;
design and machining of sensor enclosures.
Background
Needed: Silicon microfabrication lab courses taken; or
polymer synthesis experience; or mechanical design using software
like SolidWorks or AutoDesk.

General Research Interest: Nanobiotechnology,
Sensors for Medical and Environmental Chemicals, Toxicology of Nanomaterials,
Self-Assembling Materials, Materials for Catalysis, Electronic Devices, and
Fuel Cells.
Student Participation: Undergraduate
students would work alongside graduate students on laboratory experiments, data
analysis and learn to use scientific equipment independently. Students may also assist us with classroom
and public communication of scientific findings in the form of posters,
powerpoint presentations, web site design and maintenance, and oral
presentations at group and departmental gatherings.
Background Needed: Mathematics
(1st year calculus is minimum), basic chemistry, biology and/or
physics (student can be currently enrolled in these or have AP credit).

Student Participation: Active participation in various
research activities going on in the lab. Research in our laboratory
involves synthesis of interesting low-dimensional materials
system using several different state-of-the-art techniques,
structural characterization, physical property measurement
and structure property correlation.
