General Education and Bachelor Degree Requirements

Click on the links below for lists of courses that meet the corresponding General Education or Bachelor Degree requirements. The lists include courses that are approved for Fall 2008 semester. Check your selections against the appropriate Class Schedule to assure proper requirement designation. For planning purposes, use the General Education Requirements worksheet to keep record of gened courses fulfilled. General Education Requirements (click links to view a description of the requirement, courses, criteria, and committee rosters)
- American Institutions (AI) (one course)
- Lower Division Writing (WR2) (one course)
- Quantitative Reasoning
- QA (Math) (one course) AND QB (Statistics or Logic) (one course)
OR - QA/QB (Math and Statistics/Logic) (one course)
- QA (Math) (one course) AND QB (Statistics or Logic) (one course)
- Intellectual Explorations Area
Majors may require students to take specific intellectual explorations course(s) to meet core or allied requirements for their major. Students should contact their major department for more information. College of Engineering students need to see their departmental adviser for specific requirements regarding their intellectual explorations courses. Two Intellectual Exploration (I.E.) courses in each of the four subject areas:
1. Fine Arts Courses (FF)
2. Humanities Courses (HF)
3. Physical, Life, and Applied Sciences (SF, AS): Students may take two SF courses or one SF and one AS course to satisfy this requirement.

- Applied Science Courses (AS)
4. Social and Behavioral Sciences Courses (BF)
Bachelor's Degree Requirements
1. Upper Division Communication/Writing (CW) (one course)
2. Diversity (DV) (one course)
3. International Requirement (IR) (Beginning fall semester 2007, all undergraduates entering the University of Utah must complete one three-semester hour course from the list. Starting fall semester 2013, ALL undergraduate students, regardless of the date they entered the university, will be required to complete this requirement.)
4. Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
Bachelor of Science: Quantitative Intensive (QI) (two upper-division courses). Minimum C- required for QI courses for all students starting enrollment at the U Fall 2008 or later. D- acceptable for students who initiated enrollment at the U prior to Fall 2008 and graduate by Summer 2013. Starting in Fall 2013 the C- minimum grade will be required for all B.S. degree students regardless of initial enrollment date.

Bachelor of Arts: Foreign Language Requirement: Complete course work equivalent to at least 4th semester (2020 level) competency in either a foreign language or sign language.
