Social and Behavioral Sciences (BF) Requirement Mission Statement, and Criteria

Social and Behavioral Sciences is one of four Intellectual Exploration (IE) areas of study that also includes Fine Arts, Humanities, and Physical and Life Sciences. They represent traditional areas of university inquiry. Please see an advisor to learn more.

Mission Statement: Courses in social sciences help students understand institutions, cultures, and behaviors. Such courses acquaint students with fundamental concepts, theories, and methods of analysis used in the social and behavioral sciences. They enable students to think critically about human behavior and society.

Criteria
Course content focuses on human behavior and interactions and/or on social institutions and cultures.

1.     This course is accessible to undergraduate non-majors.

2.     The course examines the historical development and/or contemporary conditions of human institutions, behavior and culture.

3.     The course explores modern analytical approaches in the social sciences, for example, hypothesis testing, interpretation, and problem clarification by means of scientific observation and/or other methodologies.

4.     The course reviews basic findings in the field.

5.      The course requires students to think critically about human behavior, society, and institutions.

6.      This upper division course represents an in-depth form of study and educational engagement.
