Mission Statement - Courses in the Physical, Life, and Applied Sciences area introduce students to the ways in which scientists, engineers, and scholars in scientifically-based technical fields gain knowledge and understanding. They illustrate the interplay between observation, theory, experiment, deduction and application. The connection between scientific and technological progress and the moral and ethical foundations of society are studied when appropriate. These courses introduce students to the ways in which engineers and scholars in scientifically based technical fields apply knowledge and understanding.
The Physical, Life, and Applied Sciences Requirement Committee has approved the following criteria for courses that meet the Applied Sciences (AS) Requirement.
1. This course is primarily for undergraduate non-majors.
2. Scientific theories, models and principles are taught.
3. Critical reasoning is required.
4. Science-based learning components are present (e.g. labs, fieldwork).
5. Quantitative reasoning through the use of problem-solving exercises is necessary.
6. Critical reasoning that employs writing is present.
7. This course surveys major sub-disciplines or processes in the Applied Sciences.
8. This course introduces students to the ways in which engineers and scholars in scientifically-based technical fields apply knowledge and understanding in the Applied Sciences.
Criteria approved by the Undergraduate Council; November 22, 2005.
