1. The major emphasis of a B.U.S. degree must be thematic, interdisciplinary, and not similar to any existing major offered at the University of Utah.
2. The student must have at least a 2.5 GPA to submit a proposal and must maintain that average until graduation.
3. The degree is meant to be prospective rather than retrospective. This means that the student must have at least 40 hours remaining to be taken when submitting the proposal. A substantial number of them should be within the major-emphasis area.
4. Prerequisites for all proposed courses must be either listed as course work in the proposal or waived in writing by the appropriate department chairperson before the proposal is approved.
